Teflon has been around for a long time. Most of us know the benefits of using this miracle coating to make sure our food doesn't stick to hot skillets. Of course Teflon even helps make our food better looking because it helps preserve the final presentation of the food when it is slipped from the pan onto a plate.
Back in 1997 the media reported a new invention for beautification of human feet and toes. Yep, you guessed it. Teflon. Maurice Fox, a podiatrist in the Bronx, New York with over 40 years experience working with feet developed a sock made with Teflon to protect feet from ugly blisters and long term anti-beautiful feet problems like calluses which happen when socks rub on the feet. Some socks cause a friction when worn on feet which ultimately leads to the blisters and the calluses.
Fox submitted his findings to lab tests which conclusively proved that Teflon significantly reduced the friction.
Even better news....making Teflon enhanced socks is an easy process. Basically yarn made from a variety of fabrics - nylon, cotton and Lycra - from a variety of colors, is dipped into a vat of Teflon. Dr. Fox and his colleagues dipped the inside of a sock into a liquid form of polytetrafluoroethylene, a substance made by several companies but best known as Teflon, a Du Pont Company trademark. ''When it dries, you have microscopic balls of Teflon interspersed into the yarn,'' he has told the media. ''The Teflon reduces the friction of the skin against the sock.''
Dr. Fox, Selwyn P. Schenkman, also a podiatrist in the Bronx, and Stanley Selman, a retired Du Pont official who lives in Dandridge, Tenn., received patent 5,575,012, which they are looking to license.
The socks come out of the Teflon dipping process as soft and supple as regular socks. The coating lasts as long as the socks themselves. The socks can be washed and worn repeatedly without the Teflon become ineffective. Maurice Fox received a patent for his process.
Meanwhile, all of us in quest for callus and blister free beatiful feet and toes now a new non-stick option in our stocking selections.
